Title: Wheaten Pullet Coloring
Post by: Linda Ferguson on March 19, 2017, 07:25:39 PM
These aren't the best pictures but the best I can do.
This Wheaten Pullet's coloring seems too dark, but I would like some other opinions. Would you cull her? Thank you - Linda

I am in no way able to judge them since I am just starting to breed them in the Bantam variety. I would think the shade is not as big of a deal breaker as the black striping in her hackles. Again I do not know for sure and am curious what the Wheaten breeders say?

She is not as light and creamy as we like to see, but I would not be afraid to use her as a pullet breeder unless you have plenty of others to use.   I would not save the cockerels.   A little black ticking in the lower hackle of females is not a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned.   I've seen them win in good competition more than once.  In fact, Mary Lou Phelps had a bantam hen with the ticking that won three Best of Breeds at three of our national meets.

She's a little on the darker side but I wouldn't say overly so.  Wouldn't go any darker though.  Gonna send you an email now...
