Our Ameraucana National Meet is back on!  ;D
Indiana is lifting their ban on poultry shows and our Board of Directors has unanimously voted to place our meet at the Central Indiana Poultry Show, Saturday, October 17th, 2015, in Lebanon.  More info to follow...

The Gilberts and Blehms will be staying at the Comfort Inn.  There are a few hotels in Lebanon  (http://www.booking.com/city/us/lebanon-indiana.en.html?aid=306742&label=msn-oV9FHoOaCRQsCZlhvQpeQA-8491415980&utm_campaign=IN:+Indiana&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=bing&utm_term=hotels%20lebanon%20indiana)to choose from and many more near Indianapolis.

Kristine, we will plan to deliver your birds to the national meet.   That will save you an extra trip to the Midwest.

Even though this is only a one-day show some of us will treat it like a two-day show as we have in the past with our National Meets.  We generally coop-in Friday late afternoon/evening, check in to the hotel and get together with others that are available for dinner.  We'll get together again for dinner on Saturday (time and place will be announced in advance).  We'll coop-out early Sunday and head home.

We'll have a club meeting after the judging on Saturday and hand out awards (time and place to be determined).

Just spoke with Bob Rennolet of South Dakota.   He and Sandy are planning to participate at Lebanon.    Since our place is on their way, we may end up traveling together.

I'm working with the other board members to finalize a list of awards and will include it in the fall Ameraucana Newsletter and also post it here.  Royce and Jim Fegan have donated cash awards and I've donated some nest eggs and nest boxes.  Please let me know it you have any "specials" to donate.

If I want to donate some cash for awards (like champion/res champion overall both open show and youth) do I just send it pay pal to the club with a note John?

Normally "specials" donated by members are distributed by them but I've already received some, so I'll take more and make sure they get to the winners.  Here is a list of awards to date.

We can, but very few show trios and displays.  The cash prizes you offered for them last year that weren't awarded should be carried over this year, in your name, by the ABC.

Yes, true, but I don't know why that is.   Anybody can get lucky and win with a single bird.   It takes an accomplished breeder to put down matching trios and full displays.    Not to mention the extra conditioning issues with the older birds in displays.

No.  This was a last minute deal, after shows were cancelled and Indiana opened back up.  We were fortunate to be able to place our meet and be welcomed as we are.  The $ is gravy on top.

That's where I'm at, not enough cages to get them looking like they should, but I'll bring as many as I can. I'm renting a car, so if anyone wants to rideshare I can go up in size - Michelle? Renee?

I received a check in the mail today, from Harold Knapp, for $50 to "use it wherever needed".  What a guy!  I've applied $24 to the two unsponsored Egg Contest Coasters and the remaining $26 can be designated for something or used to help cover the cash awards.

I so wish I could make it.  As it is now I'm not sure I'll have any birds in condition for an October show.  My birds are in terrible shape right now.  I'm hoping they'll finish by the time the November show happens.  I do have a few pullets catching my eye though.  Not sure if they'll be of enough size by October or November though.

If anyone my way is going to the Nationals, let me know.  Maybe I could help with the gas in exchange for taking some birds to the show.  If I don't make it though, ya know I wish y'all the best show, have lots of fun and fellowship, and "Go Ameraucanas!"

How about a "show of hands" of those who plan to attend the National Meet in October?     I will list a few that I know for sure plan to attend,   because they may not use the forum often.   Please indicate if you plan to show birds, eggs, or both.   Jim Fegan can't make it this year because of his ministerial duties for two churches.

Bob and Sandy Rennolet  (birds)
The Gilberts  (birds)   doubt if the pullets will be laying yet by that time
Neil and Donna Townsend (  ?   )
Gina Neta  (birds - maybe)

Pretty much the same here, but quantity may trump quality.  It's always more about being there than winning and since Russ is bringing the winning birds that area is already taken care of. ;)
Everyone please remember to come whether you have birds to show or not.  The annual Ameraucana National Meet is our opportunity to check on the birds entered, but more importantly it is a time of fellowship for those of us with a common interest.
Please don't forget to bring eggs for that contest.  We have great prizes for you.  The rules were posted earlier in this thread.

The family and I will be attending with Birds. I doubt pullets will be laying well enough for eggs and my Hens have began to molt so egg production is way down. Looks to me that the youth can only enter either or instead of double entry in youth and open show so they will probably only bring 1 bird each, possibly a few call ducks. If it wasn't apparent in my post I am extremely excited for this show and fellowship 😃😃😃. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Ditto. Even then I'll end up scratching one or two. I will try to bring as many as I can fit. They won't all be in show condition, but I hope they hurry up with their molt - can't bring 'em naked!  ;D

At the moment, I have exactly ONE bird laying on the entire place, a lavender hen. She lays a nice egg, just hope she continues to do so for another month...

This will be my first time taking birds out of state - anything I should know? Do I need to get some type of health certificate? I'm going to try to get the testers out here anyway because, although I'm NPIP, most of the birds hatched after the flock was tested, so they don't have bands.

Also, in NC we are required to show our poultry/ratite license if we bring birds to sell. Anyone know what IN requires?
Title: Re: Ameraucana National Meet in Lebanon, IN
Post by: John W Blehm on September 21, 2015, 07:20:49 PM
Beth,

All I do is put my NPIP flock # (mine is 34-208) on the entry form, whether it is asked for or not on the form.  Since your flock (breeders) were tested all your birds hatched from them are also covered that go to the show, for any reason (exhibition, sale, showmanship, etc.).  I showed there last year...no problem.

FYI, Doug Ackers told me in an email back on July 13th...

Open to all states. No additional requirements. Just Have NPIP as always in case it's needed.

Stan, you have dibs!  ;) I just need to figure out which ones are staying and which ones are going.

John, glad to hear IN isn't like NC. At the last show here I had to test 2 dozen birds at check-in because they didn't have bands (since they hatched after the flock had been tested), even though I had my NPIP card in hand. I said what's the point of testing the flock if I have to test at the show anyway, and they couldn't really give me a reason. They also require out-of-state birds to have an AI test within 21 days prior to the show. Steve Troxler, Commissioner of Agriculture, prevents me from voting a straight ticket. I have to break ranks every time to vote against him, not that we'll ever get rid of him... but must lodge my feeble protest...

If you are bringing birds to sell (especially those that are already spoken for), please consider entering them in the show to boost our numbers.  You coop them in and after judging they become property of the buyer.  Or if they are not spoken for you can write "for sale" on the coop cards, after judging.

It would be nice to have a restaurant where we could get a separate room, like we did at Golden Corral in Lucasville.   Otherwise there is the potential that we don't all get seated in the same section of the restaurant.    If anybody wants to count noses, Bob and Sandy & Mary & I represent four.

I mentioned Golden Corral in my email, for recommendations, to Doug and Ron.  I think we would have to drive to Indy to find one and asked for recommendations within a 30 minute drive.  Plus, I did a lot of searching on-line for restaurants and didn't see one listed.

I just talked to Julie at Parky's and made reservations for 15-20 at 6pm, on Friday.  She said it wouldn't be cost effective to reserve a room.  They have them, but with minimum charges.  She said there are a couple tables for 8-10 people each, near each other and kind of in a corner, where we can sit and eat (an more adult atmosphere than Wild Wings).  I said I will call closer to that weekend with a better count and maybe a different time.  Let me know if 5pm or some other time sounds better to you all.  Also, an accurate count before we get there would be appreciated.

All other things equal I prefer locally owned over a chain. Nothing against them but nearly every restaurant chain is represented here in Jacksonville (seems marines don't cook ;) ) so I always like to check out the one-of-a-kind places when I go somewhere new.

Just got a $50 check in the mail today from Neil & Donna Townsend for awards.  Since they are more into bantams and there was some leftover cash sent in by Harold Knapp and Beth Curran (after purchasing coasters), who are also into bantams, I've applied it to an extra cash prize for BV recognized bantams.
It breaks down to $10.25/BV if all 8 varieties are represented, but if there are fewer the $82 will be divided by whatever number there is. :)

I don't think anyone replied when it was brought up, but we can do something for them if anyone plans to enter some.  Cash, rosettes, plaques, coasters?  If other than cash I would just have them made after the show, since all categories probably won't be covered.  Remember any bird that is part of a trio or display still competes as in individual for awards offered.

(update 10/2/15)  I can enter both a LF & bantam trio, if others are and want to compete for awards.

Just mailed in my entry of 17 Ameraucana and 3 call ducks. Most of the Large Fowl still need time to finish out and are not in the best condition for show. Just figured I would try and bring one of each of the varieties I raise to represent them at Nationals. Now the Bantams I am bringing will be ready to compete. Looking forward to seeing everyone there, looks like I will be making the trip alone due to my daughters cross country meet. May everyone be blessed with safe journies. Now its time to get everyone bathed groomed primped and pressed lol.

Last minute as always but mine went out today. Two dozen Ameraucanas, and a Call duck. Hope they all fit in the rental (10 are bantams). And that none end up sick after all this bad weather...  :-\

Mike, thanks for asking, we fared better than many. We're shin deep in mud, and the goats won't set foot in their barn and I discovered why - fire ants have moved in to escape the water! Other than that, we're okay. Most of the flooding here is along the intercoastal waterways. A friend of mine's store flooded - 3rd time in 10 years, poor guy, but he sells to tourists and tourists hang out by the water, so that's where the store is :( . The really bad flooding seems to be south of us. Myrtle Beach got it pretty bad, and Charleston is dealing with unprecedented flooding. I'm just thankful the hurricane missed us - Fran followed Bertha in '96 and took out most of the trees - the roots pulled right out of the saturated ground. Floyd followed Dennis in '99 and we had widespread flooding. If Joaquin had hit us on top of this, we would have been facing all of the above and then some, I'm afraid!

The rosettes arrived today.  The large ones with white buttons are a bit washed out by the lighting, so it is difficult to make out the gold Ameraucana Alliance logo on them.

Bob Evans doesn't take reservations and they are a smaller restaurant than some other Bob Evan's.  After talking to them it sounded like we should come up with another location.  I found a Golden Corral near Indy that is less than a 30 minute drive, but didn't find one good review for that location after checking a few sites.
Kathy is looking into having pizza and pop (no alcohol) at the Comfort Inn on Saturday from 6pm till 8pm, in their meeting room.  I think this would be the best option for our group, if she can talk the hotel into allowing it.  The Front Desk Manager said "no", but she is still doesn't give up easily.  We could bring in a variety of pizzas from many local places like, Little Caesar's, Dominos, Pizza Hut, PaPa John's, Pizza King, etc.  ;D

I like that idea better, instead of driving across town at the end of a long day we just walk back to our rooms. Don't see why the hotel would have a problem with it, you can have pizza delivered to your room, why not the meeting room?

They had a problem in the past with a group that snuck in alcohol, got rowdy and left a mess.  Kathy said we could get subs also, if wanted and some desserts.

Pizza at the Comfort Inn on Saturday at 6 it is.  We have to have the meeting room cleaned up and by out by 8pm.  Please email me with your preferences on pizza/subs and pop/drinks, along with your reservation.  We'll have a variety to choose from.  Feel free to bring your own non alcoholic drinks.  We can either split the costs there or come up with prices like $4/kid and maybe $6/anyone 14 & older and donate any leftover $ to the club.  Thoughts?

Here are the number I have...
Friday @ Parky's
Gilbert - 2
Rennolet - 2
Blehm - 2
Curran - 2

Saturday @ Comfort Inn
Malcolm 10
Gilbert - 2
Rennolet - 2
Blehm - 2
Neta - 3
Curran - 2
Blair - 1

Kathy rocks! :)

Walker & I intend to be there both nights, barring any delays on Friday. I'm debating leaving on Thursday, driving until we get tired, then getting a room. I hate to pay for a third night in a hotel, but it's 13 hours if we make no stops, which never happens, so we'd have to leave by 2am allow for food/bathroom breaks and still get the birds cooped in before dinner. I see coop-in goes all the way up til 10pm Friday night, we could do it after, but I'd prefer to do it as soon as we get there, and I'm sure the birds would, too.

I'm in panic mode trying to get everything done, making lists and staging things so I won't forget anything - who's there with me?? ;D

I was thinking maybe a cake to celebrate our first national? We could order one from a local supermarket and one of us could pick it up on the way back to the hotel?

Kathy will get the food together with help from Mary and Sandy...probably, but they don't know it yet.  A cake will work out fine for dessert.  We'll try to get paper plates, plastic ware, napkins and stuff before we leave.
We do have a Lazy Boy, so she rocks from time to time.

From an email I received this evening...

Quote
Dear Central Indiana Open Show Exhibitor, I received your Open show entries. If you have family members in the JR. Show, you already should've received that confirmation.

The 2600+ bird show was set-up today by over 20 volunteers in nearly 8 hours.  This will be the largest Central Indiana Poultry Show ever, breaking our old record by over 500 birds.

Information for first-timers: The Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds is located along I-65 at exit 138, Lebanon, Indiana.  All exhibitors, open and Jr., should come to the Commercial Building (open show chicken building) to check-in upon arrival. Open show waterfowl, turkeys and guineas are located right next door, in the Poultry-Rabbit Building.  The Junior Show is a short walk away in Centennial Hall (formerly sheep and goat building). Sales coops are in the open sided Family Shelter.  All buildings have their names in large signage.

You have the option of cooping out on Sunday, 7:00 - 9:00 AM if you'd rather not start home at mid-afternoon after the show on Saturday.  Please let us know when you arrive or during the show if you plan to stay until Sunday.

If you coop-in on Friday, we will have free home-made snacks and hot beverages in the Commercial Building.  On Saturday, a vendor will have food for sale.

Here are the building hours:
Friday - until 10 PM.
Saturday - 6:30 AM until 1 hour after the show.
Sunday - open by 7 AM; please get birds cooped out by 9AM.

Thanks for entering the Central Indiana Poultry Show.  We really appreciate your participation.

They for one have to be thanking the Avian Flu epidemic...500% increase is as  good as it gets.  Yes I am sorry about missing it, but to be honest, I do not have the time to prepare.  I had to tell the flock last week when I let the show possibles out of their conditioning pens  and they could frolic in what's left of the autumn  sun and grass; it sure has been a wonderful fall.

Pity today, the newsman, said flurries are expected.  but   WNEP is never right so I'm not too worried.

I feel your pain, lol! At least the duck will bathe himself, so that only leaves me 2 dozen! The black ones will likely just get dusted off, but the white ones are going to be the death of me! Aside from keeping them clean, I'm starting to second guess myself on some of the "pullets." I entered some young bantams to help with the numbers, even though they really aren't really old enough. I have always been lousy at determining gender in young birds, probably always will be, and when I filled out the entry it was during our 2-week monsoon, so I wasn't looking all that close. They are the same age as the really obvious males with smaller, lighter combs and they aren't crowing (the obvious one have been for a while) but the hackles are looking a little pointy. If I screwed up, do you think they'll let me correct it when I get there?  Seems bad form to ask... ???

Beth, our experience has been if the birds are the same breed and variety the show secretary can be pretty flexible.  You could email Doug and ask...  Also if you already entered and payed for the entry it should count even if the bird(s) do not show up.  Two of our birds lost their tails last week so they will be staying home for now.
PS I find saddle/cushion feathers are a better judge of age than hackle feathers and combs on young birds.  Try those instead.🐔

Beth, if the birds are too young to tell males from females, personally I would not bring them.    I know you have already spent the entry fee money, but we will have a reasonably good showing anyway, and we don't do ourselves any favors by showing less than fair quality birds.  Most of mine are too young as well, but there is no doubt which are pullets and which are cockerels.  I'm only showing eight Ameraucanas, six bantams and two large fowl.

160 Ameraucanas total, between the open and jr shows!

Quote
John, Paul and Ron,
Nice turnout of Ameraucanas.  60 large fowl and 66 bantams entered.  We will give the Ameraucana Alliance $200. in cash for awards or (whatever you want)for having over 100 birds entered.  We have 66 AOSB entered and 145 AOCCL entered.

Also, Jr. show- 25 Ameraucana bantams and 9 Ameraucana large fowl.

What a great show club to work with.  Doug keeps as up to date and having this info before a meet is pretty much unheard of.

I'm embarrassed to even tell you how old they are, but fairly sure you would have no problem telling them apart, I'm just really bad at it. Really. Bad.  :-[ I did end up scratching them, along with a couple others that just weren't ready. I was scrapping the bottom of the barrel trying to get to that 100 mark, but we're well past it, and besides the entry fees were paid I don't think they'd count it against us anyway.

Truck halfway loaded, see you guys soon!
