Title: Bids to host our 2020 Ameraucana National Meet(s)?
Post by: John W Blehm on October 08, 2019, 06:42:56 PM
Remember that bids/offers for our 2020 Ameraucana National Meet(s) have to be submitted to me by November 1st.  If you have a show in mind that you want the board to consider for a national meet please solicit a bid/offer from them.  The board will place one or two national meets by November 15th, so all our Alliance members have plenty of time to prepare.

Here is the offer from Michigan Poultry Fanciers (http://fowlfest.org/)...
Quote
We will provide up to two 8' tables and 2 chairs.
We will provide an area for your club meeting.
Your club will have first choice of the judges we hire and your breed(s) will be judged first, provided your breed club is the first to place a national meet with us - first come, first serve.
Your breed(s) will be given a prominent location in the showroom.  Your breed will be on top if double stacking is necessary and if applicable your bantam and large fowl breeds will be placed as near to each other as possible.
Your National Meet will be promoted on our website and in our Poultry Press ad.
Your breed club will receive up to two full pages in our Show Catalog to promote your club and awards offered by it.  (I understand there isn't a printed show catalog that goes out in the mail anymore.)
Your breed club will receive a rebate of $2 per bird entered of your breed(s). (this rebate part of the offer was updated 11/1/2019)
Their Fowl Fest show will be Oct. 10-11, 2020, in Birch Run, MI

Updated 10/21/2019...
Russ Blair and I will organize if meet is placed.

At least two members, that plan to attend the show, must agree to organize our National Meet there before a bid is considered.

Yes, we would love to host the Ameraucana Alliance National Meet in 2020.  Here's our bid.

The Central Indiana Poultry Show offers the Ameraucana Alliance the following if we are selected to host your National Meet in 2020:
1) $200 cash if over 100 Ameraucanas are exhibited in the open show.  $300. if over 200 Ameraucanas are exhibited.  You may use the cash as prize money at the show or for any other club purpose later.
2) Your choice of judges we hire.  (We will start your National Meet judging at 9:00 AM unless- another National Meet selects the same judge, you may have that judge but one club will have to wait until the other meet is over.  This will be based on which breed club is first to let the show secretary know of their judge choice).
3) Single decking
4) Table for your club
5) Plaque for Best Overall Ameraucana

The Central Indiana Poultry Show is conveniently located along I-65, Lebanon, Indiana at exit 138.  Our open show building is new in 2019 and has nice, modern restrooms in the building.  It is insulated, heated and air conditioned.  Numerous hotels are just 2 miles from the show also along the interstate at exit 140.

We have 3 offers to consider and the shows aren't all that far apart.  We can place one or two national meets for 2020.  Our Ameraucana Meet Policy (http://ameraucana.org/DnLd/Meet%20Policy.pdf) doesn't say the meets have to be far apart, but the idea of two nationals was to place them far apart geographically so that members that wouldn’t make the drive to one that is too far may go to one closer.
According to MapQuest it is 339 miles (5 hours 5 minutes) between Birch Run, MI and Lebanon, IN.  It is 445 miles (6 hours 45 minutes) between Sedalia, MO and Lebanon, IN.  It is 713 miles (11 hours 13 minutes) between Birch Run, MI and Sedalia, MO.
I believe we should have an Ameraucana Midwest National in Michigan and an Ameraucana Southern National in Missouri.

Please post your comments and suggestions.

The offer from the show club is important, but there are many things to consider along with it.  Here are some that I can think of...
 * When is the show?  October thru the 1st half of November is preferred.
 * Testing - Do we just need an NPIP flock # or recent Pullorum/Typhoid test or is more needed?
 * How well is the show run?  Reputation?  Do they turn in Meet Reports on time?
 * Is a location that draws the most members with the most entries more important than moving it around the country?
 * Money/Rebates - How much is offered to our breed club?
 * How much will it cost us per entry?
 * Are awards offered such as plaques for AOCCL and AOSB?
 * Do we have first choice of the judges they hire?
 * Will our birds be given a prominent location in the showroom, our bantams and large fowl close together?
 * Will our birds be single stacked?  If double stacking is necessary will our birds be on top?
 * Will our breed be judged first?
 * Do they provide a club table (or more) and chairs?
 * Do they provide an area for our club meeting?
 * Will we be able to have a silent auction of Ameraucanas and related items?
 * Will they promote our Ameraucana National Meet on their website, social media, print ads?
 * Facility - Close to expressway?  Good lighting?  Wide aisles?  Easy access to coop in and coop out?
 * What else is offered in the area, like restaurants and entertainment especially for family members that aren't into showing?
 * What about lodging availability and costs?  Is camping available?
 * Are all birds entered in the open show, so every Alliance member showing is eligible every Alliance award offered in the sanctioned meet?
 * Is the show room pet free and smoke free?
 * ?

I agree. Two national's Michigan and Missouri also if you have never shown at fowl fest you need to do it! The area is awesome for family fun and eat's.
But the way best chicken Alfredo pizza we ever had .

I do think we need to confirm the date(s) of the Missouri and Michigan shows next year to make sure they do not conflict with each other.   There may be a few in the middle who would like to attend both of them.   Shows have been known to change their dates from one year to the next.

If we place it here and have our Saturday evening get-together in the pavilion, in our backyard like before, just remind me to include Tiffany's (https://tiffanysfoodandspirits.com/index.html) chicken fettuccine alfredo pizza in our meal...just to put a smile on your face.

It reminds me of how much my buddy Jerry Segler enjoyed going to Willi's Sausage ("Our Wurst is the Best!"), in Frankenmuth, (http://www.willissausages.com/) when he came to the Fowl Fest.

Birch Run and Frankenmuth are geared toward tourists, so bring all the family members that aren't into poultry and turn them loose.   ;)

I'm thinking that a more southern location could improve our club visibility, so my preference is Lebanon and Mo...Birch Run is on the upper fringe of the country, and is too far for members from the south to travel...never been to that show, but I was at our national in LeBannon and we were well treated and it is a nice show, much more convenient to the entire eastern part of the country...

All three offers seem great, Lebanon is a great venue. I just wonder if two meets will facilitate more members? If we did fowl fest and Sedalia I could probably attend both. I just don't think Sedalia and Lebanon are far enough apart to warrant both as "National Meets". So if we go with Lebanon I would suggest it as the National Meet. Just my two cents

If we only do one, Sedalia would be my first pick since we haven't done one there since the split. And on a personal note I have family nearby so I can combine the trip.

I've attended and thoroughly enjoyed both of the other shows and would be happy to go back to either, but if we're doing two nationals in the same region I think they need to be as far apart as possible so I would go with Fowl Fest.

My first choice is Michigan, nice bright, clean, heated building, single stack, great paved parking and accessibility, shops and restaurants close. MI and MO sounds good though MO is too far for me to go.

I showed at Lebanon this year for the first time.  I was very impressed with the show and how well run it was for a one day show.  Plus they seem to be offering more. They have separate buildings for open and junior. We all know members travel well to the national meets. If this means anything, 2020 judges are Anthony Ashley, Steve Beaty, Tim Bowles and Lewis Cunningham. I also understand the concerns of  the logistics.  My two cents.

I agree with Beth.   Two shows as far apart as possible, which would be Michigan and Missouri.   Otherwise, just one show in the middle - which would be Indiana.

I've read a few posts and had emails touting the IN offer and not that the money is the top priority, but as I read the offers MI and IN are only offering the same if 100 birds are shown, which would be $200.  Less than that IN offers no rebate and MI still is paying $2 on each entry.  If we had 200 birds IN would pay $300, but MI would be at $400.

Agreed, Both MI & MO Nationals would be great.

I will say that if we only had one National, that Missouri would be best because of Location, Michigan and Indiana are both still on the eastern half of the country. However if we did have two, Missouri and either MI or IN would be fine. Just thinking about our western members having to drive all the way to Indiana or Michigan when we could split the difference.

There would have been no bad decision, so congrats to the Officers and Directors for making perhaps the best choice when you take into consideration the likelihood this will allow more folks to attend a national meet.    I suspect we won't make both shows, but if we do go to just one it will likely be Missouri since we have not been there for quite a few years.  And we have relatives in southern Missouri we would probably meet up with at or after the show.   Of course at our age everything is subject to change.

So far I've referred to these as Midwest and Southern national meets and although MO is a Southern state it is also a Midwest state as defined by the US Census Bureau.  I still prefer calling our MO meet the Ameraucana Southern Naional, but know MI shouldn't be called our Midwest national when MO could use it also.  Last year we ended up with Eastern and Western, but some folks think when we have two nationals they have to be east and west of each other and that isn't the case.  I suggest we call MI the Ameraucana Great Lakes National or even Ameraucana Northern National.  This is time to comments, input, suggestions and then the board will vote for our official titles.

Black with gold print.  The last ones were yellow with black print that Burt Awards made, but they don't offer ribbons anymore.  The new place I use, Action Awards (https://www.actionawardsonline.com/), only has gold foil printing on ribbons and I felt it didn't have enough contrast on a yellow ribbon.  The BV and RV ribbons are blue and red, respectively, with gold print.
I buy 10" ribbons, so they fit in a #12 envelope without folding and only require a 1st class stamp.

Dear Michigan Certified Pullorum Testers,

Due to the shortage of available pullorum antigen in the United States, The State Veterinarian, Dr. Nora Wineland, is removing the requirement for exhibition poultry to be pullorum tested at Michigan fairs and exhibitions for calendar year 2020.  This exemption is for the 2020  calendar year only.   Note: Out-of-state poultry still need to be pullorum tested (or be from NPIP-certified flocks, with a VS 9-3) to enter the state, and must show documentation of this at exhibition.

Attached is an MDARD policy regarding the exemption of Pullorum Testing at Fairs and Exhibitions in Michigan for 2020.

Since there is no pullorum antigen available, and hasn't been for some time,  I don't know how Michigan can expect any out-of-state exhibitors.   My Wisconsin Tested Flock certification expires June 30th, and there is no way right now to become recertified.    Is there some angle to this I'm not seeing?

Missouri State Poultry Association that was to host our Ameraucana Southern National has cancelled their show for this October.

We have decided to cancel the fall show 2020. Just want everyone to be safe, we are planning next show for 4-17-2021, Keep us in mind for next year.
Our board of directors will decide whether or not to find another venue to replace this one, but due to COVID19 some shows that haven't cancelled yet may still.

Michigan Poultry Fanciers is hosting our Ameraucana Northern National, but it looks as if their show will probably be cancelled also.

We are going to make a final decision on Sept 1.  Either release a catalog or not.  I am not at all hopeful.
I would like a backup plan in place and the MPF will loan us enough show cooping to put an Ameraucana only national meet at my place, if the Fowl Fest is cancelled.  I have a 30’ by 40’ shed that could be cleared out for the birds.  There is also an enclosed pavilion and barrier-free restroom in our backyard for attendees to use while here.  We are just 7.5 miles from the I-75 exit in Birch Run and there many hotels between Bridgeport, Frankenmuth and Birch Run…the 3 closest towns to my place.  RVs/campers could park in our backyard and have electrical hookups, with their extension cords.  This would be for our members and their families only.  We would need one licensed judge and pay meet fees to the APA & ABA.  I have made this proposal to our board of directors, so please feel free to comment here before we vote on any alternative plans.

John that is a very gracious offer. I personally like the idea of having a contingency plan. Especially if we are still planning on special awards? Which perhaps we may need to avoid this year due to the circumstances? I know I would plan on attending if we had it at your place.

If John can get a judge, his offer sounds swell.

Stacy Melton and I were speaking about this just today. I think if it is a small meet with just the Ameraucana folks it should be safe enough. I would love to see everyone. I vote as a yes if we are voting. I had planned on bringing my son along this time so he could show his pretty white bantams i picked up for him last year.

Thank you.  Our national meet placed at the Fowl Fest, in Michigan, hasn't been canceled yet so this is the back up plan that the board will vote on soon.  To hear that members would plan to come should make the decision and easy one for the board.

I like having a back up plan for Northern National. Especially since it’s up in the air until Sept 1. I would be able to make the Northern but it is not looking good for the Southerns possible new date and venue.

Our board of directors has voted...

Our Ameraucana Northern National will be at John Blehm’s farm, 4599 Lange Rd, Birch Run MI 48415, on Oct 10, 2020 – If Fowl Fest is canceled.

Our Ameraucana Southern National will be at Sherry Klaus’ farm, 27 Trophy Buck Ln, Foristell MO 63348, on Oct 31, 2020.

These will be private meets for Alliance members and families only…not open to the public.  Our club will act as the host/show club paying sanctioning fees to the APA & ABA as required.  We will hire one judge per show.

How much should we charge per entry?  $3 wouldn’t be too much, but I’m thinking about going cheap like maybe just $2.  It may entice the members that come to show more birds and bigger numbers would be a plus.

From my own perspective, the number of entries does not depend so much on the entry fee, but by the number of birds that happen to be in condition to show.  I think $3 per entry is a bargain.

$3 a head is a fair price, after all it will be used for cage rental, payment of judge if needed etc etc.
