old hen eggbound
« on: May 28, 2015, 06:47:07 PM »
Hi,  I had a brown red hen for several years.  Got her at TSCO.  She was laying throughout the winter and now in the spring.  Today it seems she just up and died, momento mori, and it seems she was eggbound.  I guess that can happen when old as well as young?  I've never had an old hen die of that, just young pullet laying their first egg so i was surprised

Yup.  In the words of good ol' Forrest... It haa-aapens.   :(  Had a 2 or 3yr old Buckeye die from one a few years ago.

I didn't realize that could happen with age either. I guess I'm lucky because in seven years of poultry keeping, I've never had an egg bound or prolasped hen (knock on wood) but it sounds awful for all involved. Sorry bout your hen.  :(
